About Us

Aries Denmark

It is our goal to provide vane gear solutions for sailing boats up to 56 feet's length, we are located in the small city of Nordborg, north on the island Als in southern Denmark. Read the story below, about how Aries got to Denmark.

How I got married to the Aries vane gear

In 1986 I bought one of Nick Franklin's gears mainly for a single handed passage I intended to do, Denmark - England and back. This voyage was planned to take place two years after, I would then be 22 years of age and have finished my apprenticeship. Also that year I had received my fathers consent to borrow the boat for that summer. What he did not know then was that he was not to see either his son or his boat until five years later.
The sea, as you all know, does not have any limits. I had a good boat (well my father had), good sails, a good portion of young spirits, it was a Friday in August in Falmouth 1988. I could not resist. I went to sea bound for the warm countries far down South where I had heard that the wind is gentle, the sea is smooth and the girls are fantastic.
That Friday I started my education at sea. I was sick in the tides and fog in the English channel, I was becalmed for days North of Madeira and I spent Christmas all on my own on the Atlantic. I soon learned that life out at sea was not always as romantic as in my dreams, but then again, it was a fair player. Good preparation is half of the success on a voyage. My boat was small (28') but simple and strong, the sea never let me down.
To cut a long story short, I went all the way to New Zealand where I, 2½ years after leaving home, called up my father to confess what I had done. Well, what was said in this phone call I think it would not be appropriate to print in a sailing magazine but the end of it was that I was convinced that the best thing to do was to turn around the ship and head home.
